Bout-of-Books 28 Progress

BoutOfBooks-880x400-03

As usual, I’ll keep this post front and center for the duration of Bout-of-Books 28 so it’ll be easy for everyone to see how I’m doing. New this time, as the bright and shiny icon to the left suggests, I’m an Expert! What that means is that I’m here to cheer you on, answer questions and/or direct you to the correct resource if I can’t help you directly. I’m also here to make sure you’re having fun! (That may not be part of my official capacity as an “Expert”, but it’s an important goal none the less. 😉 )

During the last Bout-of-Books, I mentioned that I had recently started picking up books from my physical collection. That has been going surprisingly well, so I’m going to continue by making sure I add at least one to my list this week. As for the rest of my reading list this week? It’s up for grabs, but will more than likely include more than a few books for review. Although my reviews are surprisingly under control, I’m kind of behind on my review reading list. Speaking of reviews, as with every Bout-of-Books, I plan on keeping my promise to review each book as they’re read. Daunting, I know, but things get totally out of control if I don’t – trust me – I speak from experience.

Once again, I’m hoping I get around to at least a couple of the Challenges during this Bout-of-Books, even though I haven’t for a while. I definitely plan on taking part in the Twitter Chats on Monday and Saturday, because they are a blast!

You have until Tuesday, May 12 at 11:59 pm (CST) to join in on the fun… after all, you were gonna read anyway, right? Why not join in on the epic craziness? You can sign up on the official Bout-of-Books site.

Today’s #insixwords Challenge:  Another Amazing BoB Reading Week Complete!
Books:

Bout-of-Books 28 (May 11-17, 2020)

What a perfect time for a Bout-of-Books break! The Bout-of-Books 27.5 unofficial, impromptu read-a-thon was a nice diversion and warm up, but now it’s time for the real thing!

If you’ve never participated, you really need to consider joining in on all the fun. There’s always crazy shenanigans, fun challenges, some crazy fast twitter chats and loads of ways to meet and interact with some crazy cool bloggers. Did I mention it’s a CRAZY week, but in a good kind of crazy way as opposed to the new kind of crazy that most of us are experiencing right now? Oh, and it’s also a great excuse to read as much as you can for an entire week! No pressure, just plain fun! To find out more, read the official blurb below and follow the link to the Official Bout-of-Books blog.

The Bout of Books readathon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly Rubidoux Apple. It’s a weeklong readathon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 11th and runs through Sunday, May 17th in YOUR time zone. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are daily challenges, Twitter chats, and exclusive Instagram challenges, but they’re all completely optional. For Bout of Books 28 information and updates, visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

BoB-Expert06Oh, and for anyone who may have questions, want more info or just want to chat about how amazing Bout-of-Books is, I’m now an official expert. Since I’ve been around since the very first tweet that started all this craziness, I’ve been an unofficial expert for quite some time, but now I have this nifty badge to back me up. 😉

Bout-of-Books 27.5 – Safe At Home Edition

Consider this a warm-up for Bout-of-Books 28. Unless you are one of the many essential people who are out on the front lines making sure that the rest of us have everything we need, we’re all stuck at home (or at least we should be…) What better distraction than a good book? And an even better way to distract yourself would be to read with a whole bunch of other people. Am I right? Now, this Bout-of-Books isn’t like all the others. It’s an impromptu way to help pass the time and have just a little bit of fun. No pressure, no challenges, no sign-ups, no official updates. Just read as much as you can between April 6 & 12 and know a whole bunch of people are doing it right along with you. You can find the details on this Twitter thread. I won’t be doing anything “official”, but I will be reviewing ALL the books as I read them. I’m also going to devote most of the week to reading books that I’ve gotten review requests from authors for. I’ll keep this post front and center on my blog and make a list of the books that I’m reading as I read them. Want to join in? Get the details at the Twitter link and pick up a book. 😉

Bout-of-Books 27 Progress

BoutOfBooks-880x400-03

As usual, I’ll keep this post front and center for the duration of Bout-of-Books 27 so it’ll be easy for everyone to see how I’m doing. I have absolutely no idea what I’ll be reading this week, other than some review books, but that’s nothing new. I’ve recently started pulling physical books off their dusty shelves and giving my Kindle a much needed rest. I haven’t abandoned it entirely however, but it feels good to hold a physical book – I forgot how much I missed that. So, I’m sure that there will be at least one of those on my TBR pile this week. The only other thing that I promise myself every Bout-of-Books is to write reviews as I finish a book. I usually stick to that promise, and since I’m more than a “few” reviews behind, you will hopefully be treated to more than a couple reviews from the eclectic mix of books I’ve finished in the past couple of weeks.

Once again, I’m hoping I get around to at least a couple of the Challenges during this Bout-of-Books because some of them sound really cool and I definitely plan on taking part in the Twitter Chats on Monday and Saturday, because they are a blast!

Bout-of-Books 28 (January 6-12, 2020)

It’s a new year and in keeping with all things new, Bout-of-Books 27 has snuck upon me! How is that even possible? It seems like it was just yesterday, or last week that Bout-of-Books 26 was a vivid memory. *sigh*

Venom in the Veins (Elemental Assassin #17) by Jennifer Estep (Bout-of-Books 26 Review)

Blood might be thicker than water, but venom is stronger than just about anything …
It was supposed to be a nice, quiet, simple dinner with friends—but nothing is ever nice, quiet, or simple when you’re Gin Blanco, the Spider, notorious assassin and current queen of the Ashland underworld.
This time around, someone seems to be targeting Stuart Mosley, the president of First Trust bank. Lots of people have grudges against Mosley, but the more I investigate, the more Mosley’s problems seem to be connected to some of my own, especially when it comes to the Circle, the evil, shadowy group that is secretly responsible for much of the crime and corruption in Ashland.
But when another blast from my dark and deadly past as the Spider comes to light, I wonder if I’ll be able to survive this dangerous new enemy, who has a burning thirst for revenge that will only be satisfied with one thing: my death.

I can’t believe I missed this book when it was first released, but there is a silver lining to procrastination – or not paying attention. Now I don’t have to wait very long before Sharpest Sting because it is scheduled to be released in October. 😉

To be honest, I probably should done a quick re-read of Snared before I read Venom in the Veins. After all, it had been 2 years since I finished the last book in the Elemental Assassin series. The author threw in enough memories and recaps that it was easy to keep up though. My favorite memories though were of her and Fletcher, which is usually the case.

Gin has proven over and over again that she would do anything to protect her family and that circle seems to be growing. Almost as much as her list of enemies. There’s little down time in Venom in the Veins, there’s also a lot of ground covered and plenty of danger. It also seems that each answered question or solved mystery is followed closely by even more. Not the least of which was the unexpected ally that Gin gained, which made her trust him even less.

There was also an unexpected revelation at the end of Venom in the Veins that should prove to make things in Sharpest Sting even more interesting. Like I said, it’s a good thing I don’t have a long wait. It’s going to be hard enough to wait until October to see what happens next.

Three Part Harmony (Plot Twist #2) by Holley Trent (Bout-of-Books 26 Review)

Sometimes three is deliciously better than two
Raleigh McKean has borne witness to every conceivable way one person can take advantage of another. He sees it all the time in his job as a book publicist, especially working alongside his boss’s daughter. Everley Shannon would be amazing if she wasn’t such a pain in his ass.
All Raleigh wants is something real. But when the captivating stranger he agrees to go home with turns out to be Bruce Engle, the elusive rock star, it’s a harsh reminder that users are everywhere. Raleigh’s his route to a book deal, nothing more.
What Raleigh doesn’t realize is that the brooding musician is also searching for something real—and it’s possible he’s already found it in Everley’s arms. But is there room in those arms for one more?
With Everley’s own dream of getting out from under her father’s shadow crumbling into chaos, it feels like the perfect time to embrace something new. But when Raleigh’s insatiable attraction to both Everley and Bruce makes it impossible to keep his distance, there’s only one obvious solution…assuming they can learn how to share.

I need to start this review with a couple of confessions… First, I didn’t read the book blurb before I made the request for the ARC. I don’t think that would have stopped me from picking it up, but it kind of threw me when I got to Everley’s POV in the book. Second, I didn’t read the first book in the series (Writing Her In) before I read this book. No worries on that one though, because I’m definitely back tracking to get to Dara, Adrien and Stacia’s story, especially after meeting Stacia in Three Part Harmony and getting a sneak peek at Writing Her In at the end of book 2.

Three Part Harmony not only took me by surprise, it drew me in so strongly that I finished it in less than 24 hours. The more I got to know these characters, the more I wanted to get to know them better. I fell in love with all of them, which doesn’t mean I didn’t get aggravated with them at times (especially Raleigh). Even then, they had good reasons for what they did and how they reacted. It was hard not to adore Bruce and want to love and protect him as much as Everley did. Honestly though, all three of these characters needed some type of love and protection because none of them had it easy. Which was just one of the many reasons why they were so perfect for each other.

The romance was great in Three Part Harmony, but honestly, what I think I loved most was the humor, wit and snarkiness that pretty much all the characters possessed. It definitely made me want to search out more books by Holley Trent – which I probably will. Even after I pick up Writing Her In. 😉

This time, I have a bunch of books that I’ve been putting off reading – and before you ask, I have absolutely no idea why. There’s at least one series that I’ve read every book in, but somehow lost track of… Yikes! Other than that, I have a feeling that most of you will be just as surprised as I will by what ends up on my reading list 😉 The only other thing that I promise myself every Bout-of-Books is to write reviews as I finish a book. I may, once again, attempt to pick up an actual physical book, because I can’t honestly remember the last time I actually did that. *sigh* I usually have at least one book I’ve started and need to finish by the time Bout-of-Books starts, but I think I’ll be starting fresh on midnight. Other than that, I have a feeling that most of you will be just as surprised as me by what ends up on my reading list 😉 The only other thing that I promise myself every Bout-of-Books is to write reviews as I finish a book. I usually stick to that promise, but since I’m ahead on my reviews (Wahoo!), there may be a bit of a time lapse before they actually show up here. I do post them as soon as I write them on Goodreads and Amazon, so if you’re super curious, you can track them down there.

Once again, I hoping I get around to at least a couple of the Challenges during this Bout-of-Books because some of them sound really cool and I definitely plan on taking part in the Twitter Chats on Monday and Saturday, because they are a blast!

You have until Tuesday, May 14 at 11:59 pm (CST) to join in on the fun… after all, you were gonna read anyway, right? Why not join in on the epic craziness? You can sign up on the official Bout-of-Books site.
