The Beast (Black Dagger Brotherhood #14) by J.R. Ward – Bout-of-Books 18 Review

thebeastNothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself
For Rhage the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart life was supposed to be perfect. Or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. But he can’t understand or control the panic and insecurity that plague him. Terrified, he must reassess his priorities after suffering a mortal injury. And the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his and his beloved Mary’s world…

Gotta tell ya, Rhage scared me in this one. To be honest, he scared pretty much everyone who cared about him, including himself. He wasn’t quite sure where his head was or his heart, which was totally not like him since his Mary came into his life. So yeah, he scared me. Mary scared me and then they both totally broke me. *sigh*

It’s kind of hard not to know where things are going from pretty early on, but the journey is so totally worth it, I don’t want to spoil it for anyone else. Just know that a LOT happens in The Beast and not just to Mary and Rhage.

One of the things I like most about this series is something that some readers complain about, which is the multiple POVs. I love spending page time with familiar characters and the introduction of new characters. To me it gives this series a ‘family’ feel, which is exactly what the Brotherhood is. More than once in The Beast, the entire family was there physically for whoever was in need of their support.

There were tears – both happy and sad, life or death situations, more than a few nail biting moments, some jaw dropping revelations and alliances that were unexpected. Pretty much what faithful readers have come to expect from the BDB and more.

Needless to say I can’t wait until the next book in the series is released. I’ve been patiently waiting on the paperback versions for the last couple of books, but but I don’t think I can put off The Chosen (Layla & Xcor) that long. Plus, there are so many other loose ends left hanging at the end of The Beast. Waiting until April will be long enough.

Off Base (Out of Uniform #1) by Annabeth Albert – Bout-of-Books 18 Review

offbaseAfter trading the barracks for a fixer-upper rental, navy SEAL Zack Nelson wants peace, not a roommate—especially not Pike, who sees things about Zack he most wants to hide. Pike’s flirting puts virgin Zack on edge. And the questions Pike’s arrival would spark from Zack’s teammates about his own sexuality? Nope. Not going there. But Zack can’t refuse.
Pike Reynolds knows there won’t be a warm welcome in his new home. What can he say? He’s an acquired taste. But he needs this chance to get his life together. Also, teasing the uptight SEAL will be hella fun. Still, Pike has to tread carefully; he’s had his fill of tourists in the past, and he can’t risk his heart on another, not even one as hot, as built—and, okay, yeah, as adorable—as Zack.
Living with Pike crumbles Zack’s restraint and fuels his curiosity. He discovers how well they fit together in bed…in the shower…in the hallway… He needs Pike more than he could have imagined, yet he doesn’t know how to be the man Pike deserves.

CreativeDeedsReadsDisclosure1This is the first book in Annabeth Albert’s Out of Uniform series, but it’s not the first time that Pike and Zack are introduced. Since it’s also the first book of Annabeth Albert’s that I’ve read, I now have to go back and read some of her #gaymers series… sneaky, sneaky author. *sigh*

To be honest, it took me a little while to connect with Pike. I’m not sure why, because once that reader/character connection clicked, there was no breaking it. I admired the way he was comfortable with who he was as much as I understood Zack’s crippling uncomfortableness. Their stalemate was heartbreaking. 😦

The supporting characters were great and I can’t wait to see more of most of them. I wanted to cheer the heroes that came to Zack’s rescue in this book… characters that gave him hope. One thing that I would have liked that readers didn’t get was true interaction between Pike and his mom. She was painted as such a cool character that I really wanted to meet her.

Needless to say, I can’t wait to read more about these men Out of Uniform. In the mean time I’m going to peruse more of this author’s back list.

Ravenous (Finn Factor #4) by R.G. Alexander – Bout-of-Books 18 Review

ravenousIs it wrong to be this Ravenous?
When Jennifer Finn was good, she was very very good, and when she was bad…she got arrested for assault and indecent exposure. Now Jen’s back in school and determined to find her balance. But one man seems just as determined to destroy her equilibrium, and he knows all the right buttons to push.
What began as a favor for an old friend became something more the instant Trick Dunham laid eyes on Jen. Now he can’t resist inserting himself into her life, despite warnings from her family. Little Finn might be struggling to find her path but Trick knows exactly where she belongs. What she needs. He just has to get her and their third to agree.
Professor Declan Kelley has a weakness for his old lover, Trick. The bad boy ex-con has become a wickedly sensual man who comes whenever he pleases, but never stays. When he shows up again it’s to offer Declan one of his darkest desires to date—Jennifer Finn and Trick together on a three-way platter. But that would threaten the safe, uncomplicated life he’s built for himself, and Declan’s not doing that for anything.
Unless it’s forever…
Warning: This book is a Jenga tower of sin. Explicit, graphic, shocking, teetering-on-the-edge-of-unbalanced, unapologetic sin. M/m, m/f, f watching m/m together and liking it so much that m grabs f and makes her a part of the dirtiest m/m/f ménage in history. That’s right, I said it. Role play—the hot-for-teacher kind, the sexy-thief-in-the-night kind AND…well sometimes you just have to ignore the warnings and dive right in.

I forgot how much I loved the Finn crew. However, their brand of ‘love’ isn’t for everyone, so heed the warning. 🙂

Beyond the obvious, this book turned into a really sweet love story – ironic, huh? Little Finn wasn’t in as much need of protection as her over protective brothers and cousins seemed to think she was. She was working hard to stay out of trouble, but with someone like Trick stalking her, it wasn’t easy. As overbearing as they were, I still loved them for it. I loved the members of the crew that gave her a little bit of credit even more. ❤

It also turns out that Trick wasn’t quite as ‘bad’ as he tried to make everyone think he was… and Declan wasn’t quite as… well, you’ll just have to read their story to find out.

Even though I had my doubts about how such a nontraditional relationship could work, Declan, Trick and Jenn made it seem logical. I was kind of disappointed in the elder Finn’s reaction in a way, but they had their reasons. I have no doubt they’ll eventually work things out. It was also nice to touch base with other characters from previous books in the series. On that note, I can’t wait to pick up Finn Again, which is next. 😉

The Keeper (Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper #8) by J.L. Bryan – Bout-of-Books 18 Review

thekeeperThe South Channel lighthouse is a crumbling antique at the mouth of the Savannah River, abandoned and forgotten for generations. Local stories still tell of a mysterious woman in white who often stood at the old lighthouse, watching the sailors come into port…even long after she died.
Now the property by the lighthouse is owned by a famous movie star in search of a remote beach getaway on sleepy Tybee Island. Unfortunately, old ghosts haunt her new retreat, stirred up by the construction of a luxurious new mansion. Ellie, Stacey, and their team must remove the ghosts, who grow more dangerous and aggressive every night, threatening the lives of the client and her family and personal staff.
The lighthouse has a dark history, with many ghosts, and mysteries to unravel before Ellie can send them on to the other side.

CreativeDeedsReadsDisclosure1Things didn’t end well for Ellie in Lullaby, the last book in the Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper series. The Keeper started where Lullaby left off and unfortunately, things hadn’t gotten much better. Ellie felt betrayed by more than one person and the list of people she felt she could count on was getting smaller and smaller. *sigh*

The danger was ramped up even more in The Keeper and the tension was even higher because Ellie had some personal history with the location. She kept that to herself though, which may have made it easier for her to tell that their client was doing the same. Add to the official ghost trapping drama on Tybee Island the fact that Kara is still a danger and Ellie & Stacey’s side ghost hunting endeavors, it’s no surprise that there was little or no down time in The Keeper.

There were more than a couple of mysteries solved, twists and turns that kept you wondering who the good guys were vs. the bad guys and more than just a little emotional drama. All in a day’s work for an evil author pro like J.L. Bryan. Not sure what he has planned next for Ellie, but there’s definitely more. Even though The Keeper didn’t end in a cliff hanger, there’s still a lot of loose ends that need tying. 😉
