Dragon Awakened (The Hidden #1) by Jaime Rush

DragonAwakenedThey are the Hidden.
Not quite human. Far from normal.
And never, ever safe…
Playing With Fire
Ruby Salazaar wants answers…and revenge. Her uncle has just been murdered before her eyes and the name he utters with his final breath—Cyntag—leads Ruby into a world beyond her wildest imaginings. She soon learns that the dark, sexy Cyntag Valeron knows more about her than she does herself.

Burned By Love
Ruby changed Cyn’s life before she even knew who he was. Now she charges into his life, a beautiful woman full of fire and questions. Cyn knew this day would come, yet he couldn’t foresee the danger—and desires—Ruby would bring with her. He can teach her how to harness her newly awakened powers. But there is one force neither of them can control.

CreativeDeedsReadsDisclosure1From the time this story opens readers are drawn into a whirlwind of action, drama and intense emotion. It doesn’t slow down either. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end and I loved every minute of it… except for the tears, and yes there were some, so be prepared.

This is the first book by Jaime Rush that I’ve read, but I can pretty much guarantee that it won’t be the last. I loved Cyn and Ruby – although our introduction to Cyn was brutal. That brutality pretty is such a huge part of Cyn’s past that he doesn’t just think he isn’t meant to be a part of Ruby’s life, he knows it. There’s no stopping the draw between Cyn and Ruby though. The inevitable way things play out is heartbreaking – hence the tears. *sigh*

I loved the world building in Dragon Awakened. The premise and mythology that Jaime Rush has created promises to make this a very interesting series. The Hidden is full of demons and magic and all sorts of interesting creatures and a network of forces of both good and evil. There’s also a lot of grey, which always keeps things interesting. The formatting is unique as well. The story itself is broken up by what Ruby had always thought was a fairy tale. It was a unique and interesting way to give readers some background info without just ‘telling’ the story. I liked that little twist.

The next book in the series is Magic Possessed, but there are also two prequel novellas that have already been released – Dragon Mine and Dragon Rising.

    • I’m not sure about the novellas either. I think that they might offer some background, but I picked up on that pretty well with Dragon Awakened. Especially since it all had to be explained to Ruby. 😉 I think this was a great start to a series that I can’t wait to dig into.
