I realize that fan girling at my age is more than a little embarrassing, you’re just going to have to deal with a little bit of rambling and maybe a little bit of squealing too. Honesty, the squealing really did happen when I got my author assignments for this tour. Not one, but two great authors! Besides that – I just can’t believe that I got paired with Kendall Grey for the All Hallows Eve Indies Blog Tour!
Okay, so have you read any of Kendall’s books? Do you know how awesome she is? Well, you’re about to find out. She has two series out right now. One is contemporary – The Hard Rock Harlots – which currently includes Strings and Beats, with book 3 – Nocturnes, in the works. Since this tour is all about the paranormal though, we’re going to be talking about her Just Breathe trilogy. Are you ready?
Strangers in reality, inseparable in dreams…
After years of suffocating under her boss’s scrutiny, whale biologist Zoe Morgan finally lands a job as director of a tagging project in Hervey Bay, Australia. Success Down Under all but guarantees her the promotion of a lifetime, and Zoe won’t let anything—or anyone—stand in her way. Not the whale voices she suddenly hears in her head, not the ex who won’t take no for an answer, and especially not the gorgeous figment of her imagination who keeps saving her from the fiery hell of her dreams.
Gavin Cassidy hasn’t been called to help a human Wyldling in over a year, which is fine by him. Still blaming himself for the death of his partner, he keeps the guilt at bay by indulging in every excess his rock star persona affords. That is, until he’s summoned to protect Zoe from hungry Fyre Elementals and learns his new charge is the key to restoring order in the dying Dreaming. He never expects to fall for the feisty Dr. Morgan…nor does he realize he may have to sacrifice the woman he loves to save an entire country.
The Just Breathe trilogy is like no other PNR series I’ve picked up. I kept seeing Inhale on a lot of my friends’ book lists and they were going crazy over it. Well, when enough people have that kind of reaction to a book it has to be read, right? Turns out I had it on my Kindle and didn’t even know it. (Don’t judge – I read a lot of books.) Anyway, one night I decided to see what all the craziness was about. There are no words… none. Well, my review of Inhale has a lot of words, but none of them come close to how this book makes you feel. It’s one of those times that the book lives up to the hype. If you don’t believe me, follow the link and check it out for yourself. As of the time that I wrote this, Inhale was still FREE – so you’ve got nothing to lose…. unless you don’t pick it up – because then you would be missing out on a lot. Okay… let me get back on track here… where was I?
Oh yeah, we were talking about the Just Breathe series *face palm* (I warned you about the rambling, right?) In this series Kendall has created a fantastic paranormal world that is based on Elementals. The magic of Fire, Air, Land and Water are balanced in a perfect world. The Dreaming is a place that humans safely escape and the Elementals all play nice. But the world that Zoe and Gavin are living in isn’t balanced and it’s far from perfect – and the Elementals seeking power don’t play nice at all. This series has danger, some very heated romance, humor, fantastic witty & smart characters – along with some really, really evil ones – and all of it is brought together in a writing style that is as passionate as the characters. Speaking of which, if I had to pick one word to describe Kendall Grey, that would be it. Passionate. It doesn’t matter what this woman is writing or ‘talking’ about – she is passionate about everything she does that’s important to her – and it shows. It’s what brings her characters to life and makes them worth caring about, laughing with and crying over. (I know, I’m rambling again, but I can’t help it!)
Her dreams brought them together, but reality could tear them apart…
The man of Zoe Morgan’s dreams isn’t only real, he’s interested. In her. But her boss wants her too, and is leveraging his unsolicited advances with the threat of blocking the huge promotion she’s after. When he places a spy on her research team, the intense stranger discovers more than he should, and Zoe fears hiding a relationship with Gavin Cassidy from her boss is the least of her worries. The whale she must protect has been marked for death, and Zoe’s old enemy Scarlet is eager to deliver the killing blow. To both of them.
Australia’s Sentinels must find and lock the door into the Dreaming before Fyre Elementals launch another attack on innocent dreamers. But corruption and distrust abound, and Gavin believes someone on the Sentinel council is in league with the Fyres. As he reluctantly embraces his new role as council leader, Gavin must not only keep Zoe safe from Scarlet’s vengeful clutches, but organize a Sentinel defense strong enough to prevent a full-blown Elemental war—with a traitor fighting by his side.
The second book in this series is one that I just finished. To be honest, it’s also one that I’ve put off reading for a while. As much as I wanted to read it, I also knew it was going to be a tough one to read. I wasn’t wrong. Did I mention #AuthorsAreEvil? Yeah, this hash tag has been floating around for a while now and books like Exhale and authors like Kendall are just a few of the many reasons why. *sigh* (You can read my review right below this post.)
So, what makes Kendall Grey’s writing so amazing? Since I know that a simple description won’t even come close, how about a little sample? Honestly, when you highlight a quote in the first chapter of a book you know it’s going to be good and that’s exactly where this one came from:
Coolness flowed from her trembling palm into his. Their Water merged, ebbing and flowing across the boundaries of flesh. Christ, it felt good. Familiar. Safe. She pumped his hand twice, then her grip slackened.
Though he didn’t want to let go, the break in contact helped him wrangle his scattered wits back into a manageable ball. He and Zoe were in the open, exposed. Gavin swept the street again with his Dreamsense. As far as he could tell, no Fyre Elementals had snuck up while his brain evacuated its cranial real estate in favor of warmer southern climes in Hardwood Heights.
Yeah, just a taste of the smart wit that is strewn throughout this series. I love these characters. And remember that passion I was talking about earlier? Well, there’s more than one kind of passion and Kendall isn’t shy about portraying any of it. *fans self* (and trust me, this scene is tame compared to the rest of them… but this kiss was just too good not to share.)
He’d always viewed kissing as the path of least resistance to achieving the goal of bedding women. But Jesus, this wasn’t a kiss. It was a fucking experience. Like discovering a new world. And the intoxicating atmosphere in Zoeland turned his bones to jelly.
Now would probably be a good time to mention that Kendall Grey does not write for the faint of heart and her books are not for everyone. She puts a disclaimer on her books for that specific reason – so pay attention. She doesn’t hide it nor does she apologize for it and I respect her for that. It’s just one of the many reasons why I love her writing. It’s raw, honest, extreme and holds nothing back. It’s that ‘passion’ that makes it so gut wrenching, heart breaking and beautiful all at the same time.
He made a deal with the devil to save the woman he loves…
After tragedy rocks the foundation of their relationship, Australian Sentinel Gavin Cassidy and whale biologist Zoe Morgan call it quits. Gavin can’t forgive himself for shattering her trust, and being with the sexy rock star is killing Zoe. Literally.
But love—and duty—are powerful motivators, and alliances are forged in the most unlikely places. With the key to salvation locked inside the mind of an unconscious child, Gavin must find another way to snuff out the Fyre Elementals before millions of humans die, or make good on his deal with the devil and lose the one he loves. Again.
The last book in the series is Just Breathe. After ‘surviving’ Inhale (that’s not an exaggeration – read the review), I will not wait nearly as long to pick up Just Breathe. Oh, and you want to know something else really cool about this series? All the profits from the sale of the JUST BREATHE trilogy are donated to programs that educate people about whales and the challenges they face. Yep, just one more reason to pick up this series and see what all the fuss is about. 😉 While you’re checking out her books, here’s a couple of ways you can stalk her. (Only lovingly, of course.)
