Cowboy with a Cause (Cowboy Café #3) by Carla Cassidy

CowboyWithACauseDancer Melanie Brooks had escaped small-town Oklahoma, giving up the country for Broadway’s bright lights. Yet after her mother’s funeral called her back, her own health issues forced her to stay. Now her tenant, too-hot-for-his-own-good Adam Benson, is giving her a reason to dance again. But has a killer set his sights on her, too?

Adam knows a little something about fresh starts. As for his beautiful neighbor, he doesn’t see a wheelchair—he sees a woman who understands. But as the heat grows between them, he can’t avoid the feeling that more than her big-city past haunts her—and that danger has been lurking, waiting to strike.

OK, I’m going to rant a little bit here. I HATE it when an author/publisher or whoever the deciding power is puts a book that falls in the middle of a series available to readers FREE when the first books in the series are regular price. I suppose it’s a nice treat for followers of the series, but I take advantage of Freebies more to introduce myself to an author’s writing. It’s a small pet peeve, but I believe it’s legitimate. What makes it worse is that (at least on Amazon) most of the time the seller doesn’t designate which version the book is. I do enough intentional bouncing around with series books, I don’t need a book seller’s help. *sigh* Now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, I’ll get on with the review.

I ended up reading Cowboy with a Cause in one night. I didn’t intend to, it just kind of happened. I got so caught up in the characters and the mystery that I just couldn’t stop. The characters were great, the suspense was more than enough to keep the pages turning and the romance was intense, yet really, really sweet.

There were a couple teeny tiny editing issues and a couple of teeny tiny moments where I shook my head about decisions characters made, but none of it deterred from the story. The supporting characters were great and I was definitely rooting for a happily ever after for this couple.

As you probably figured out from my opening rant, this was not the first book in the Cowboy Café series, Sometimes that doesn’t bother me but evidently a lot happened in the first two books and a lot of those things affected Adam. So, if you decide to pick up Cowboy with a Cause, it would probably be a good idea to check out The Cowboy’s Claim #2 and Her Cowboy Distraction #1 first. I’m guessing it will make things slightly less confusing or at the very least help you connect a few missing dots.

I received Cowboy with a Cause as a FREE download from Amazon on September 3, 2013.
